About Charlie Cairoli

Charlie Cairoli was a legendary figure in the world of circus and entertainment, known for his iconic clown persona and extraordinary skills. Born on February 7, 1910, in Milan, Italy, as Charles Granelli, he would go on to become one of the most beloved and recognized clowns of his time.

Cairoli’s journey into the world of entertainment began at a young age when he joined the circus. His natural talent for comedy and physical agility quickly set him apart, and he soon became a prominent figure in the European circus scene. In the 1930s, Cairoli’s career took a significant turn when he joined the famous Bertram Mills Circus in London, where he would remain a star attraction for many years.

What set Charlie Cairoli apart was not just his impeccable comedic timing and slapstick humour but also his ability to connect with audiences on a profound emotional level. His performances were not just about laughter; they were a celebration of joy and the universal language of happiness. Cairoli’s exaggerated facial expressions, colourful costumes, and mischievous antics endeared him to audiences of all ages.

Throughout his career, Cairoli toured extensively, bringing his unique brand of entertainment to audiences across the globe. His popularity transcended cultural and language barriers, making him a true international sensation. Cairoli didn’t limit his performances to the circus ring; he also found success on television, becoming a familiar face to millions of viewers.

Cairoli performed at the Blackpool Tower Circus for nearly 40 years and became one of the few clowns to successfully transition to television, achieving household name status. The Order of the British Empire (OBE) was awarded to Cairoli in 1979, recognizing his remarkable contributions to the world of entertainment.  This honour reflected not only his skill as a performer but also his impact on popular culture.

Birdcage resident Artist Stephen Waters says ” Charlie Cairoli had to be in the Bowler Hat brigade series, the bowler was absolutely one of his trademarks. He was never seen without it!  Here he is as I remember him as a kid in the 70’s, on TV and here sharing the bill on ‘Seaside Special’, with such 70’s showbiz luminaries as The Goodies and Tony Blackburn!”

Charlie Cairoli’s legacy continues to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to witness his performances. Even after his passing in 1980, his influence on the world of clowning and entertainment remains significant. People  remember Cairoli not just as a talented performer, but as a timeless symbol of laughter and joy, reminding us of the power of humour to unite people from all walks of life.

Here’s a recent news story about Showtown, the Blackpool showbiz museum’s acquisition of some new Charlie Cairoli archive, to add to their collection and a video report below.
