About

About
These days the work is mostly rooted in digital media, though after decades of pencil squeezing, paint paddling and making things for the sheer joy of it, the studio has drifted through most creative disciplines at one time or another. At heart, this is a maker’s studio — a place for ideas, experiments and objects.
The overall aesthetic probably sits somewhere inside “Retro British Pop Culture” — if that wasn’t already a recognised category, it is now. There is a lasting fascination with strong primary colour, vintage fairground art, 1960s and 70s design, music, television, celebrity culture and the strange charm of everyday British nostalgia. The work ranges from graphic and digital pieces through to lightboxes, sculptural objects, figures, puppets and the occasional lamp.
The Birdcage Studio
The Birdcage is not a place of confinement. It is a place of creativity and making.
The name originally came from the barred windows of the studio space itself, but over time the Birdcage became a symbol of ideas being held long enough to take shape. Not trapped, but housed. Not restrained, but structured. A framework where work can evolve from thought into something physical and real.
At the centre of the logo sits the wasp — restless, alert, capable of leaving at any moment, yet choosing to remain. It represents the active creative mind inside a dedicated working space. The mark itself forms a monogram: both symbol and signature. A reminder that every finished piece begins with process, judgement, experimentation and human hands.
The aim has never been decoration for its own sake, but work with personality, atmosphere and intent.
Commissions
Commissions are always welcome.
Whether it is a bespoke lightbox, sculptural piece, prop, figure or something more unusual, the same attention is given to detail, finish and craftsmanship throughout. Every project is approached as a one-off piece rather than a production item.
